Let me be the first to suggest VBulletin

Most of the large forums like LS1Tech, ISSF, Reckless all use it. It's way eisier to navigate than this design.

+1

Eric, as far as transitioning and losing members, dont sweat that, these forums will stay up for the time being and u can use this as a base for your members...basically shut these down and make one thread here that says NEAMA HAS MOVED and everytime someone signs up u can update there post count and shit.

Yup, im going with phpbb tho as vbulletin is $160 + $30 each year. I can get everyone over quickly, especially when the new one will look 10x better.

Greetings. I have a few recommendations since I ran the message forum New England Fbody for about a year or so. I am not claiming to be an expert on the subject, nor was I ever as the website no longer exists.

I would recommend not putting too high expectations on yourself. If this is uncharted territory for you, keep your goals small.

If you think you will have a lot of time and want to do web development with your spare time (that you could be out drinkin or big pimpin or playing xbox), then go for it. I thought I would want to, but summertime I found I had no desire to work on a computer at all. I actually don't post much on forums in the summer, never mind want to work on them.

I think for now, the website is fine. I can come here and talk to people, that's good enough for me. If you want to go higher, I'd stay with phpBB as it's free. No need for vBulletin as it's expensive.

Also when it comes to enforcing rules, I would be very very laid back on it. I think most sites are too strict, if someone has a slight disagreement, a thread gets locked. To me, it looks silly when I see a ton of locked threads. If something is really bad and needs to be moderated, I would just delete it. Most people won't even know there was any issue except for the people who posted in it. We used to have some douchebags on nefbody who would put in hours of time to troll and shit.

That's what we had for nefbody, though with the amount of members posting, we could have just used the basic bare minimum godaddy hosting package. Powweb seemed to be really good for a decently sized website, but I think it was too much and too expensive for what we needed. Be willing to buy a smaller hosting service and pay for it all yourself.

Also note that there are many new england car/racing/etc forums out there. For the most part you are sorta reinventing the wheel for a lot of people who already post on other websites. I'm not trying to rain on your parade, but just to give you a perspective of what your target audience is like. Actually when I wanted to take over nefbody, I didn't know that 80% of the forums I post on now ever existed.
