rear end replacement

Postby 87' IROC on Sun Mar 09, 2008 10:58 pm

Well it's been about 3 months since I've had my 87 IROC and about a month since I was told the rear end is a POS and to grab one from a bone yard. Well I grabbed one from an 89' Camaro that has 3.42 gears. I am in the process of cleaning it all out and replacing the axle bearings and seals. After it's all set I'll hopefully bring it down to some place where I can get it sandblasted and get it back to my house to paint it with POR 15. I then need to swap the rear ends. I hope everything goes well and I'll keep everyone posted on the progress.

Well guys kinda new update on my IROC! No pictures unfortunately :( but yeah we've gotten all the extra shit off of the rear end and we took out the axles and pulled out the bearings/seals. I finished cleaning up the inside of the housing and the gears themselves. This tuesday I will be bringing it to the shop I now work at! (All Tune and Lube in Lowell, 205 Church St if anyone wants to stop by!) Anyways, I got my long tube headers in from Hooker, I got my MSD 8.5MM ignition wires on with new AC Delco plugs that came with the car, also have a new MSD cap/rotor/blaster coil. I installed a TPI air foil and the K&N air filters. I got a new ATF and AT filter and threw that on there. I tested her out on my street a quick second and even with chipped gears I was able to chirp going into second gear with my 700R4, twas fun. But yes pictures will ensue later in the weeks of everything that's going into the car such as new window motors, headers, exhaust, rear hatch motor and gear etc. Thanks guys/gals!

unfortunately not Sarah. You're seeing me ride around in my piece 83 camaro. My 87 is in the shop I work at right now. Oh and update for everyone! We got the rear end out and took a look around. The 4.11 ring gear is destroyed BUT the posi is intact!! Today I ordered new rear shocks, 3.73 gears, and a rebuild kit. It will hopefully be here tomorrow. I was grinding down the rear end today after we took everything off of it. I'll be bringing in my POR 15 tomorrow to give that bad boy a new rust free finish ;) and bring it to life with a set of sick gears. I can just taste the torque kicking me in the mouth right now haha.

DUNANANANAH It's finished! We got everything installed into the rear end. My 3.73 gears and a Eaton Detroit locking posi. It's doing great so far I have the car on the road now and it's phenomenal. I just got my free 350 TPI engine from my neighbor today, but that's a whole new project ;)

Just to be nitpicky, the Detroit locker and a posi differential are different things. Did you put in a locker?
