engine work 98 ls1 z28

Postby AtreidesMarine on Fri Feb 22, 2008 4:39 pm

Yup, that's the name of the game.
My 1998 Camaro Z28 needs some work (not alot, but could become that lol)

i need new lifters and possibly new rocker arms. Valve springs at worst.
Along with some ignition issues, and was thinking of the fuel pump and injectors.

I'm not sure if the transmission might need a re-build or not and i know the rear-end is leaking and that an iffy repair.

took it to a trans place, and said the transmission is fine, but i just wanna be sure.

so i figured i'd buy some comp cams lifters... and am half lost on what rockers to buy, as money isn't exactly... in high amounts.

as for the spark plugs/wires/ coil packs, i dunno if its worth MSD over GM replacements.

oh yeah, all new O2 sensors and the wires too.

so any help would be great...

thanks, Andrew

id go have Don at Dez Racing in Seekonk take a look at it...hes the man with ls1s...as for the tranny i dont trust shops that say there is no problem either..
if u think ur gonna need all that stuff thats def gonna be a pricey pricey job valvetrain alone is ridiculous for LS1s money wise...Do not waste ur money on the MSD coil packs they have more issues than the OEM ones..get urself some NGK plugs and MSD wires ...as for valvetrain r u planning on throwin a cam in? cause i wouldnt bother replacing that if ur not unless u r already having issues with it. and how many miles are on ur car?

nah, i'm not gunna bother with cams, more money than i would like to throw down, nor would i want to re-tune my car lol

thats good to know, since msd coils are double the price.
i just have a mildly nasty lifter tick, and i was told it might also be the rocker arms, and if i've got the intake manifold, fuel injector rails and all off, i might as well replace some stuff that isn't too expensive, plus, it's hard to cruise and look cool when your engine sound a muscle sewing machine lol.

would like to replace the belts since the are getting pretty overly squeeky and a bit too worn. replace the oil pump, the brake pads and rotors since they are nasty and rusty and losing stopping power pretty rapidly. might as well do all the repairs and upgrades at the same time.

thing is, i dont want to really take the whole job to a shop and a 1/3 or half of my budget would be for labor... not a good idea. :?

Have u started thinking about a rebuild maybe? not saying your car needs it but if your gonna start modding, best mod might be just rebuilding her with some nice aftermarket parts ;)

i did consider an engine re-build, but the money involved just may be too much for me.
i was going to spend between $1,500 - $3,000

i mainly wanted to fix/replace failing or soon to need replacement parts.
the lunati cam + lifters isn't for LS1's... which sucks since that was a sweet price.

thanks for the advice and the links, is well appreciated

The lunati cam wasnt for the LS1? weird it came up under ls1 search, o well. If you were gonna rebuild the engine could u do it urself or were you going to have a shop do it.

myself... well not really, i'd get a couple buddies, or whoever wanted to help and supply the drinks and food hahaha

i did a quick search and non-performance engine rebuild is from $800-$1,200

some of the parts i dont think i need, and if im going to replace the camshaft, might as well be performance oriented. this repair/build is mostly for reliability, mixed with some performance.

still just trying to get ideas and prices.

this isn't nearly as easy as i thought hahaha
